Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is making women’s issues not only a significant issue in government, pressing governments on abuses of women’s rights and making women’s programs a central component of U.S. aid programs, but she is also making an effort to bolster support for women’s issues on the ground, attending town hall meetings and making visits to micro-credit projects and women’s dinners on her international trips. While she faces many obstacles, Clinton’s interest in global women’s issues is one that she is deeply committed to and started during her time as first lady. As a feminist icon and Secretary of State she has met with women’s groups all over the globe, and has mentioned “women” or “woman” over 450 times. Clinton’s efforts to prioritize women’s issues is being supported in the United States by a White House women’s council and a Congress with a growing number of powerful female leaders and internationally her efforts are reflected in her meetings with other officials and appearances in the communities she visits.
