"An Opportunity for Arab Participation in the World’s Affairs"

By: Raghida Dergham, Al Hayat

At the Summit on the Global Agenda in Dubai, 700 participants addressed challenging issues and sought pragmatic recommendations for political leaders and decision-makers that will be discussed again at a meeting hosted by Qatar next April. The recommendations are a part of the World Economic Forum’s Global Redesign Initiative. The participants were a select group of prominent and influential thinkers from all fields. The Summit divided the participants into 76 Global Agenda Councils that tackled issues like regional and global security, the role of the private sector, failed states and more. For the Arab world in particular, the annual Summit in Dubai - co-sponsored by Qatar, Singapore and Tanzania - offers an important opportunity for increasing Arab participation in world affairs, as well as for directing dialogue towards issues of concern specific to the MENA region.
