By: Florian Neuhof, Arabian Business

The increasing demand for power and water in Qatar is being met through public-private enterprise. In 2004, the first Independent Power and Water Plant (IWPP) became operational, the largest IWPP in Qatar is set to open in April 2011 and some reports predict the Qatari government may award another contract for a plant to open in 2012-3. Additionally, in response to this rising demand for power, Qatar is exploring nuclear and solar power. While the country announced in 2008, plans for a preliminary study of the viability of a nuclear power plant, more recently, the government made known that it was looking to invest $1 billion for a new solar power plant. Progressively, the Qatar Foundation recently announced a joint venture to produce the main ingredient in solar panels, while the Qatari government commissioned a study on the feasibility of a solar-powered desalination plants. The public works authority in Qatar is also exploring opportunities in public-private enterprise.
